Electrical Certificate of Compliance
An Electrical Certificate of Compliance ("CoC") confirms that an electrical installation has been inspected and tested and complies with SANS 10142-1, as required by the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009 made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993.
1. When you need one
- Before a property is transferred or sold, a valid CoC not older than two years is required.
- After any new installation, addition or alteration to an existing installation.
- Where an insurer, landlord, tenant or municipality requires proof of compliance.
2. What the certificate covers
A CoC covers only the installation, or the clearly described portion of it, that was inspected and tested on the date of the test. It does not cover appliances, portable equipment, or work later altered by another person. Any alteration after issue invalidates the certificate for that part of the installation.
3. How we issue it
- Work is carried out and tested by a registered person as defined in the regulations.
- We inspect and test the installation, record the results, and list any non-compliances.
- Non-compliant items must be repaired before a certificate can be issued. Repairs are quoted separately.
- The certificate and test report are issued to the user or lessor of the installation once the work is complete and settled.
4. Your responsibilities
The user or lessor of an installation must keep the certificate and produce it on request. We keep a copy of every certificate we issue for the period required by law.
5. Important
We do not issue certificates for installations we have not inspected and tested ourselves, and we cannot certify work that does not comply. Requests to do so will be declined.
